Link building for AI search means earning mentions and links on the pages that AI assistants read when a buyer asks them which tool to use. When someone asks ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity for “the best onboarding tool for a B2B SaaS”, the answer is assembled from a handful of web pages. If your product isn’t on those pages, it isn’t in the answer.

This guide covers how assistants choose what to recommend, which pages matter most, and a practical plan to get your SaaS onto them.

How AI assistants decide what to recommend

For a buying question, the major assistants don’t rely on memory alone. They run a web search, read the top results, and summarise what those pages say. Each one uses its own crawler or search index to do this: OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot, Anthropic’s Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot among them.

That makes the process closer to classic SEO than it first looks:

  1. The assistant searches. It turns the question into one or more search queries.
  2. It reads the pages that rank. For software questions, those are mostly listicles, comparison pages and category guides.
  3. It weighs who to trust. Brands mentioned across several established sites look credible. A brand that only appears on its own website rarely makes the shortlist.
  4. It names a few products. Usually the ones that appear most often, most clearly described, on the pages it read.

So two things decide whether you are recommended: whether you appear on the pages the assistant reads, and how much authority stands behind those mentions.

The pages that matter most

Not every link carries the same weight for AI search. In order of impact for a SaaS:

Page type Why it matters
“Best tools for…” listicles They answer the buying question directly, so assistants read and cite them often.
Comparison and alternatives pages Buyers ask “X vs Y” and “alternatives to X”; these pages are the source material.
Category guides and how-to articles A contextual mention in a guide about your category ties your brand to that category.
Review and directory profiles G2, Capterra, Product Hunt and similar profiles are frequent sources for product facts.
Your own site Assistants read it too, but they trust third-party pages more for “which is best”.

A practical plan for AI visibility

1. List the questions your buyers ask

Write down ten to twenty questions a buyer would type into an assistant: “best [category] tool for [audience]”, “[competitor] alternatives”, “how to [job your product does]”. These are your prompts, and they map closely to the search queries the assistant runs.

2. See what the assistants cite today

Ask each question in ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity and note the sources they show. You will usually see the same small set of listicles and comparison pages again and again. That list is your target list.

3. Get onto those pages

This is the link building part. Contact the publishers of the pages being cited, or of similar pages on sites with real traffic in your category, and get your product added with an accurate description and a link. A listicle placement on a page an assistant already cites is the single most direct move; our guide to listicle link building covers how to get one.

4. Build authority behind your category pages

Contextual links from relevant articles to your homepage and your key category pages make your site rank better in the searches assistants run, and make your brand look established. Vet each site: real organic traffic matters more than a high score. Our link quality standards set out the ten checks we use.

5. Describe your product the same way everywhere

Assistants summarise. If your site says “onboarding platform”, your G2 profile says “product tour tool” and a listicle calls you “a walkthrough widget”, the summary gets muddy. Pick one clear sentence for what you do and who it’s for, and use it on your site, your profiles and in every placement you control.

6. Let AI crawlers in

Check that your robots.txt and CDN settings don’t block the AI search crawlers. Some CDNs block them by default. An llms.txt file with a plain-text summary of your product, pricing and key pages is a cheap addition that gives assistants a clean source of facts.

7. Measure what you can

Track visits referred from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and claude.ai in your analytics, and re-run your list of buyer questions once a month to see whether you appear and how you’re described.

What doesn’t work

  • Mass links from unrelated sites. They don’t put you on the pages assistants read, and they risk your Google rankings.
  • Hidden text aimed at AI. Instructions buried in your pages for assistants to find are unreliable and look manipulative.
  • Only optimising your own site. For “which tool is best”, assistants lean on what others say about you.

Autolinks is a link-building service for B2B SaaS, run by an AI agent. It maps your competitors and the pages that rank for your category, then secures contextual DR 30+ links and, on the Growth and Dominate plans, “best of” listicle placements on sites with real traffic. Every link is monitored and guaranteed for 12 months. See how it works for AI search or how we approach best-of listicles.
